Sometimes you are lucky and 'Setup' is just a 16 bit launcher (so that it runs on the lowest common denominator) that itself launches either a 16 or 32 bit 'installer' depending on what type of system it finds itself on. Sometimes the problem is that the software to be installed is 32 bit (so should run) but the Installshield setup program is 16 bit so can't run. You'd have the same problem (can't run a 16 bit executable) on any 64 bit OS (first one was for XP AFAIK). It's not the difference between 7 and 10 that is causing the problem, it's the fact that the work machine is a 32 bit OS (which can run 16/32 bit apps)and hers is a 64 bit OS (which supports 32/64 bit ones). Is W7 that much more different than her current W10 system? Snorvey wrote:I thought I'd try her old disk on a work pc (W7 Professional 32 bit).and it installed and works perfectly. I've downloaded and scanned it, it seems to be clean. In English, the CSW 2012 and TWL 06 dictionaries are offered (Collins Scrabble Words and Tournament Word List). This appears to be a straight forward standard version of the game. A search for Open Source versions comes up with 'Eliot' (for copyright reasons it can't use the 'S' name). Unfortunately Scrabble is one of those games for which there are a multitude of 'free' downloads of varying levels of 'trustworthy-ness' (you don't want one loaded with Malware). A virtual machine running a 32 bit OS may work, but it might be a steep learning curve for a Mum who just wants to play 'Scrabble'. Snorvey wrote:Unfortunately, her old Scrabble game doesn't even want to load on to her new system (something about 16 bits or something).ġ6 and 32 bit apps can run on 32 bit Windows, but a 64 bit OS can only run 64 and 32 bit software. If you were to do that, I'd imagine Scrabble would work straight away in that VM image. Opening a VM in full screen mode will be almost indistinguishable from the original machine, especially if you've still got the old box and can take an image of the OS as it stood at the time. If you've not had any experience of VMWare (it's free for personal use), or similar products, then I'd recommend it as a route to success. There's also the option of installing VMWare ( ) on the Windows 10 machine, and installing the older version of Windows inside that Virtual Machine, and then installing the old version of Scrabble onto that. You can run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter on most programs to help detect and fix common compatibility problems.' 'Most programs created for earlier versions of Windows will work in this version of Windows, but some older programs might run poorly or not at all. It's not nice.ĭid you try installing or running the Scrabble game with 'Compatibility Mode'? And a son in law doesn't like having a sad mother in law. It does not store any personal data.Snorvey wrote:Unfortunately, her old Scrabble game doesn't even want to load on to her new system (something about 16 bits or something) so she's a sad Mother in law because she can't get her daily fix.
